ABOUT THE MESSY

Why are they called messycakes?

We absolutely love perfectly pretty party cakes, stacked and flawlessly frosted. We're amazed by sugar artists who handle fondant as if it were play-doh and create cakes so beautiful and meticulously extravagant it almost hurts to slice them. We follow bakers of these gorgeous creations on social media and leave comments of heart eyes and sparkly stars, and we send them our clients when they want something perfect.

For other days, there are messycakes. Messycakes are not perfect, nor are they covered in fondant. Messycakes are messy. They are, in essence, two desserts in one. Simply put, messycakes are the best parts of a cake layered with a second dessert as a filling between the cake layers. Sometimes, they are simple. Other times, we get a little creative. All the time, messycakes are so, so, so good. And we do think there is some pretty to being authentically messy and delicious.

We believe dessert should be a delectable indulgence. THIS is our aim.

What are those crumbs around the bottom?

Those are your very own cake crumbles.

Why would we toss pieces of yummy cake we cut off to even out the layers? We aim for tasteful, not wasteful.

What's the difference between Messy minis and messy cupcakes?

Messy minis are bite sized cupcakes and are sold by the dozen. They are topped with yummy messiness and may not have exactly the same ingredients as the messycakes or messy cupcakes of the same flavor. Because these are bite sized, they are perfect for sharing and are often underestimated by clients when calculating servings. We recommend calculating 1.5-2 minis per guest. Make sure you order enough!

Messy cupcakes are standard size cupcakes that are sliced in the middle and layered just like our messycakes. These cupcakes are smaller versions of our messycakes and have all the same ingredients. One messy cupcake is a nice portion for one person. Spoon may be necessary.

SO MANY OPTIONS

How much should I order?

Our 6" messycake feeds up to 12.
Our 8" messycake feeds up to 20.
Depending on how thick or thin you slice, the more or less people you'll feed. Keep in mind our cakes are very rich, so a little goes a long way. They are freaking delish, and therefore addicting. You know your people. Go with your gut on this one.

If you are hosting more guests than one cake feeds, we suggest getting multiple cakes, or mixing and matching cake and cupcakes. The largest messycake feeds up to 20. If you're stuck on having only one cake to feed more than 20, we suggest you get a naked cake. But keep in mind you'll be missing out on the messy stuff.

1 messy cupcake feeds 1 person. Spoon may be necessary.

The messy minis are bite sized. If you'd like your guests to have just a bite, calculate 1 per person. If your friends and family like dessert, you'd better order more. We suggest calculating 1.5-2 per person, just to make sure you have enough.

How far in advance do I need to place my order?

Because we are a small company and cakes are baked fresh to order, we need to make sure that we have everything we need to make your cake, and make sure that we can fit it in to our sometimes crazy schedule. Please order with anticipation of at least 3 days to make sure we can fulfill your order.

What's the most popular flavor?

This is our most popular question.

Probably guava & oreo. But we're not sure if this is because they're soooo good, or if we just like to photograph them and they get more camera time. Just so ya know, all our flavors have received lots of awesome feedback from our clients. We've experimented with a ton of flavor combinations. If we don't get *wow* feedback, it's not on the menu. Go with what you like, they're all delicious.

Are your cakes nut free?

All of our cakes are peanut free.

(Actually, our entire kitchen is peanut free, all the time.)

Our chocolate hazelnut salted pretzel flavor contains a hazelnut spread and our coffee toffee flavor contains house made toffee which is made with almonds. Although we take the utmost care in preparing all of our cakes carefully to avoid cross contamination, all of our flavors are prepared in the same kitchen with shared tools. If you have a severe allergy, please keep us in the loop!

TAKING CARE OF YOUR MESSYCAKE

Should the cake be refrigerated?

Maybe.

We never, ever want you to eat one of our messycakes cold, right out of the fridge. We believe that eating your cake at room temperature will allow for the best flavor experience.

Messycakes are refrigerated immediately after assembly for safekeeping and flavor settling. If you are receiving your cake in advance of your event, please refrigerate until 1-2 hours before cutting the cake. Remove cake from the cold fridge with enough time to allow the cake to ease into room temperature. If prepping for a party and would like the cake to be set out for aesthetics, wait until the last possible moment to remove it from the fridge to ensure its stability.

Our event is taking place outdoors. Can the cake be outside?

Yes. But keep it in the shade.

If you'll be enjoying the cake outdoors, keep the cake in the fridge until it's time to go. The cake should be fine if kept in a nice shady spot, out of the hot sun. If the messycake gets hot, the frosting and fillings may become soft and the cake layers may slide out of place. No bueno.

If you know you'll be in the heat for a while before you serve the cake, mini messies might be a better option. These bite sized cupcakes are packaged in plastic cupcake containers and stack nicely in a cooler.

What's the best way to transport a messycake?

If you are picking up your cake, we recommend the car floor or trunk space. We DO NOT recommend holding the box in your lap. Some car seats may be ok but we prefer a flat surface, so if your car seats are at an incline, place it on the floor.

If not, delivery is always an option. Out of state shipping coming soon!

If traveling with your cake to a nearby location, like a restaurant or a friend’s home, keep the cake in the fridge until you’re ready to go.

If traveling a few hours in a car or plane, we recommend placing the cake in an insulated box or cooler, with gel ice packs nearby to keep it cool. If a cooler is not an option, and you’re traveling in a personal vehicle, you can place the cake on the floor of the front passenger side and blast cold air on it to keep it cool. If a cooler is not an option, and you’re traveling by plane or other form of transportation, we recommend opting for mini cupcakes instead, which are easier to travel with.

THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU. DON'T CALL US.

Messycakes aren’t for everyone. They’re messy. They’re imperfect. Like those bleach-stained, hand-ripped jeans that ooze that curated, vintage vibe. Their tag discloses they’ve been designed especially for you. No two pair are alike. May fade when washed.

This is our tag.

Is my cake lopsided?

Maybe.

Certain fillings may cause layers to stack unevenly. These ARE messycakes, they WILL be messy. More filling = more deliciousness = more messy. Also, see next question.

Is my cake cracked?

Probably.

Our cakes are baked fresh to order. The fresher, the better, wouldn't you agree? Nobody likes a tough, dry cake. Our dense but fluffy cakes are the ultimate oxymoron, both a blessing and a curse. They're amazingly rich and fluffy and melt in your mouth, but surprisingly dense and heavy. When cake layers are stacked, the weight may cause layers to crack. THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU. Don't fret. Nobody cares if it's cracked if it's amazing.

My cupcakes are melting!

No, they're not. That's just some of the delectably messy syrups, glazes, fudges, and toppings that slip around and get everywhere.

This happens especially with messy minis. Take care not to drip everywhere when removing the minis from their container. Some flavors are messier than others.

POINTLESS CURIOSITIES

How many calories per serving?

Maybe you should have a light lunch. Kale, perhaps?

Messycakes aren't for counting calories. They are for indulging. #cheathere

Do you put crack in these?? They're so addicting!

No, we really don't. We DO on the other hand, use fresh ingredients that you can pronounce. Butter, eggs, sugar, flour, milk, etc. Good things can be addicting for good reasons.
